I’ve seen so many people in awe at what they can actually feel during and after a treatment even those who didn’t expect much. From deep peace, to the sense of being held, calmness, faces relax, bodies let go of the tightness, people breath more deeply. These may all seem simple things, but how often do we truly feel relaxed and at peace?

It’s surprising how one hour of complete departure from the daily hustle and bustle, with no phones and no interruption, can actually be like medicine to the body on all levels.

Reiki meets you where you are, and supports you from that space. It has something for everyone. Reiki can help you navigate life differently, support you through challenges and help you resolve issues so you can feel more peace and joy as it restores, rejuvenates and balances you on all levels.

What happens during a Reiki treatment?

A Reiki treatment takes places in a calm environment where you can allow yourself permission to relax. At the beginning of a session I will explain what Reiki is, clarify why you are looking for Reiki, and ask if you are suffering from any specific ailments. Then you get the opportunity to switch off from the real world for 30, 60 or 75 minutes, and experience the benefits of Reiki for yourself.

During the Reiki treatment you remain fully clothed and lie on a massage table. I will cover you in a light blanket so you are comfortable and relaxed. I will place my hands over specific parts of your body, usually starting from the head and working towards the feet. I will respect your privacy and personal space during this process. As I use the hand positions you may become aware of sensations (heat, cold, tingling, shivers etc) throughout your body. You may also feel nothing. This is totally normal - the Reiki energy is being absorbed by your body, going to whatever part of your body needs it the most.

Reiki usually sends people into a state of deep relaxation so you may even fall asleep. As each individual is unique, each Reiki treatment is also unique. Reiki works on many levels, going to where it needs to go. The Reiki energy is cumulative in that it builds up each time you have a treatment, which is why it is recommended to have 4-6 sessions to kick start your self-healing ability.

Experiences during a Reiki treatment vary. Some people see beautiful colours and images that mean something to them, some feel a slight tingling sensation, others feel heat or cold in certain areas. Some feel floaty and light, whilst others may feel heavy and grounded. Some people may also cry or laugh as blocked energy is released. People often fall asleep during their session, which is absolutely fine. After the treatment you may feel energised, others feel peaceful and tranquil. Most people notice a difference after the first Reiki treatment, and the benefits of Reiki grow with repeated sessions.

Are there any side effects to a Reiki treatment?

Most of the time you will feel relaxed and uplifted by a Reiki treatment. Sometimes a client will have what is called a "healing crisis" - as a person’s vibration goes up, toxins that have been stored in the body will be released into the blood stream to be filtered by the liver and kidneys and removed from the system. When this happens a client can get a headache or stomach ache, or feel weak. If this happens, it's a good idea to drink more water, eat lighter meals and get more rest. The body is cleansing itself as part of the healing process, so this is a good sign.

What do I need to do or bring?

As Reiki is a close-contact therapy you must have received all your Covid jabs, or provide a negative lateral flow test on the day of your appointment. You will be asked to remove your shoes, but otherwise you will remain fully clothed. As you will be lying down on a couch, or sitting in a chair if you prefer, it's best to wear loose, comfortable clothing. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol before a treatment . Apart from that, all you need to do is relax and enjoy the treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

I get asked this question a lot. The answer is, “It depends.” It depends on a number of things.

People receive Reiki for many different reasons. Receiving regular Reiki treatments is excellent self-care and helps you to maintain holistic balance. If you choose Reiki as a method of pampering or a boost, then a Reiki treatment once in a while is sufficient. If you have a chronic condition and wish to have Reiki treatments with the aim of improving your health challenge, on-going weekly treatments are usually encouraged for a period of six to eight weeks.

For conditions like stress, tension, anxiety, sleeplessness and emotional problems I’d suggest 4 treatments over a period of 8 weeks; physical stuff can take a little longer. If you are looking for longer term support as your navigate challenge and integrate changes into your life, I’d suggest bi-weekly or monthly treatments.

Reiki energy is cumulative and builds up in the system. While the benefits of Reiki may be noticed after one treatment, ongoing Reiki treatments are desirable for long term results. Just like anything, the more you do it the better the results.

My general recommendation is to receive three to five Reiki treatments one to two weeks apart. Once you see yourself improving you can space out treatments to one month or six weeks apart.

You know your body best and are the best spokesperson for you.

When will I feel the benefits?

Most of my clients feel some relief after just one session, others may need several sessions for the Reiki energy to do its work, and to see improvements with deeper issues. Some of my clients enjoy the relaxation and calmness so much that they book regular sessions for their general well-being.
